Arctic Grayling

Thymallus arcticus · family Salmonidae

Live · updated

The sail-finned salmonid of the far north — instantly known by its huge, iridescent dorsal fin. A staple of Alaska’s clear interior rivers and lakes (and a relict in a few Montana and Wyoming waters), it rises eagerly to dry flies in cold, fast water through the brief subarctic summer. Lightly pressured and abundant where it occurs.
