About common carp
A big, wary, bronze-scaled bottom feeder that the federal government stocked across the country from the late 1870s. It now lives in almost every warm and cool lake, reservoir and river in the country. Fish of 10–20 lb are routine and 30-pounders turn up on big rivers. Carp root along the bottom in the shallows, which gives them away to sight-casting fly anglers on flats and mudlines, and they take corn, boilies and dough baits fished on the bottom European-style. They feed hardest in warm water from late spring through early fall and spawn in noisy, splashing groups in the weedy shallows when the water reaches the mid-60s. Common carp are lightly regulated or unregulated in most states. Grass carp are a different species, and many states protect them, so check the rules before keeping one.
Around the Chesapeake. Common in the tidal-fresh Potomac and Anacostia around DC, on the Susquehanna Flats and in the upper Bay tributaries, and in many Maryland reservoirs.
Cyprinus carpio, family Cyprinidae.

The Maryland, Delaware and Virginia months are the Chesapeake-region season. Everywhere else it is carried over by water temperature: a month counts at a spot when its usual water is in the range that marks the mid-Atlantic season (56°F and warmer), from the spot’s own gauge where it has one and an estimate from air temperature where it doesn’t. Each state lists the months that hold at half or more of its spots. Where the water temperatures come from.
